Panna (Madhya Pradesh): In the first reported instance since the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, an illegally constructed madrasa in Panna’s BD Colony was voluntarily demolished by its operator, Times of India reported here.
The madrasa, which had been in existence for over three decades on government land, was removed after renewed administrative pressure and the threat of strict enforcement under the new law.
Officials confirmed that the local administration had earlier issued several notices to the madrasa operators, but no compliance was observed until recently.
The action was reportedly prompted by a complaint raised by a local Muslim resident and forwarded by BJP state president VD Sharma. Following this, authorities issued a final notice under the newly enacted law.
Anticipating enforcement measures, the operator used a bulldozer to demolish the structure before any government-initiated action took place. The madrasa was previously allowed to operate with permission from the gram panchayat, but the area now falls under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation, rendering the structure illegal.
The matter had also been entangled in a legal dispute for years, which had earlier prevented action.
Local residents and activists had long objected to the madrasa’s presence, alleging improper use of Waqf land.
He stated that the Waqf Amendment Act would now enable stricter regulation of such properties and ensure that funds from Waqf assets are directed toward community development.
The demolition marks a significant shift in how Waqf properties are being handled in Madhya Pradesh following the legislative overhaul. The amended act empowers authorities to act decisively against illegal encroachments or unauthorized activities on Waqf-designated land.
While some have welcomed the move as a step toward accountability, others have raised concerns about potential misuse of the new law and its implications for religious institutions.
The government has not indicated whether rehabilitation or assistance will be provided to those affected by demolitions under the act.
