PAHALGAM: “My husband was shot in the head while seven others were also injured in the attack,” a woman survivor told PTI over the phone, shortly after terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, on Tuesday.
The woman, who did not disclose her identity, pleaded for urgent help in evacuating the injured to a hospital.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that one person has been confirmed dead and several others are undergoing treatment at local hospitals.
According to a senior police official, security forces had rushed to Baisaran meadows in the Pahalgam tourist area after gunshots were heard earlier in the day.
Police said the area has been cordoned off and a search operation is underway. Further details are awaited.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti condemned the terrorist attack, calling the violence “unacceptable” and urging for it to be strongly denounced.
“Historically, Kashmir has welcomed tourists warmly, making this rare incident deeply concerning. A thorough investigation is needed to bring the perpetrators to justice and examine potential security lapses. Ensuring visitor safety is paramount, and steps must be taken to prevent future attacks. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” she said.
