Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar came under fire on Monday after video footage showed him pulling down the hijab of a newly appointed AYUSH doctor during a public event.
The incident took place at ‘Samvad’, the CM’s office, where over 1,000 Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Unani doctors were receiving their appointment letters.
According to reports, 75-year-old Kumar, while presenting the appointment letter to Nusrat Parveen, who wore a hijab, asked, “What is this?” before forcibly removing the veil.
The startled doctor was quickly escorted aside by an official, while Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary appeared to intervene by attempting to stop the CM.The episode drew sharp criticism from opposition parties.
The Congress described Kumar’s action as a “vile act,” questioning women’s safety in the state and demanding his resignation. The Rashtriya Janata Dal also condemned the act, questioning the chief minister’s mental state and political motives.
The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that ten doctors received their appointment letters directly from Kumar, while the rest were issued online. The incident has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread debate over propriety, gender sensitivity, and respect for religious attire in public functions.
