Mumbai: A tense hostage situation in Powai ended on Thursday when the alleged captor, Rohit Arya, was killed during a police operation, and all 17 children held hostage were rescued unharmed.
The ordeal began around 1:45 p.m. at RA Studios, a small film studio in Powai, when Arya reportedly lured children aged eight to fourteen under the pretext of conducting acting auditions.
Authorities received a distress call, and the Powai Police quickly reached the location to negotiate with the suspect.According to police officials, Arya fired at officers using an air gun, prompting them to return a round of fire.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital with gunshot injuries but succumbed during treatment.During the several-hour-long standoff, Arya refused to release the children and threatened to harm them. The police, acting to ensure the safety of the minors, executed a tactical forced entry through a bathroom, successfully rescuing all 17 children.
The children have since been reunited with their families, and authorities are arranging psychological counseling to help them recover from the trauma.Investigators revealed that prior to the hostage-taking, Arya had released a video stating that he had “chosen hostage-taking instead of dying by suicide.” In the recording, he claimed his act was a protest against what he described as “systemic betrayal” by officials. Arya emphasized that his actions were not financially motivated and insisted he was “not a terrorist,” demanding ethical accountability and simple conversations with authorities.Police recovered an air gun and several chemical containers from the scene, believed to have been used to intimidate officers. The Mumbai Police have launched a detailed investigation into Arya’s motives and are reviewing safety protocols at studios that host children for auditions.The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, has shocked the city and raised concerns over child safety at private studios.
